Terms of Use and Privacy Policy

Terms of use for SDM data

The bibliographic data contained in the SDM databases (ChoixMédia, Choix, Fautor and VMJ) appear in the computerized catalogues of hundreds of libraries. The present document describes the rights and limitations related to the Internet posting of SDM records.

In addition to document-description and -analysis data, SDM also provides in its records, annotations on the document contents and a rating index that evaluates the target audience and the value/usefulness. This information is of a unique nature and is subject to the Copyright Act.

Subject to the conditions described below, the right to post the content of SDM records is acquired either by purchasing the record via the Transit, Fautor+ or VMJ+ services, or by exporting the record from the Choix or DAVID CD-ROM (final release in 2009).

Subscribing to the Internet versions of the ChoixMédia, Choix, Fautor or VMJ databases does not constitute a right to post the material in a library catalog. In such cases, it is important that the record be purchased via the corresponding service, which confers that right.

When the posting rights have been acquired, SDM then authorizes the posting of its document-description and -analysis data in library catalogues on the Internet. The posting of annotations is also authorized, so long as the source is cited.

However, it is important to note that SDM does not authorize the posting of its target-audience and value rating index in library catalogues on the Internet. In addition, the posting must not allow the records to be displayed or exported in structured format (for example MARC format, or any other format that includes field labels, such as the ASCII or SDM formats) that would allow the records to be copied and more or less automatically imported into other library catalogues.

Access to this information must be limited to the users mentioned in the operating license granted by SDM to the establishment that purchased the records, regardless of whether that institution is an educational organization (school, school board, college, university), a public library (which can include a network of branches) or any other type of documentary centre.

It is possible with most Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) and cataloguing software, to limit the right to access certain types of data to authorized users only. These tools must be used to ensure that SDM'S copyright is protected.
